Before we dive into the actual commands and operations required to restore databases on SQL Server, you should fully understand some of the concepts related to performing the recovery operations. First, when performing restorations, it is often necessary to use the results of more than one backup operation. For example, we ll see how full, differential, and transaction log backups can be combined to restore database information. By default, after a recovery operation is completed, the database is left in a consistent state and is ready to be operational (that is, accept user connections and data modification commands). This is a good way to restore data when you want to perform recovery from a single full backup file. However, if you plan to apply multiple transaction logs, you ll need to tell SQL Server that the operation is not yet complete and that you plan to perform more recovery operations. There are two main ways to perform the commands: Enterprise Manager and Transact-SQL commands. The simplest way to perform most common recovery operations is the graphical Enterprise Manager, because it prompts you for the necessary information. If you need more control over the operations, want to script complex recovery options, or have additional requirements, then the added effort of working with the Transact-SQL commands will be well spent.

There is more than one way to join a hierarchy bridge table to the other tables in a star schema. The way in which you link the tables together in a query will depend on the kind of analysis being performed. If the facts are to be analyzed by looking down the hierarchy, one configuration is used. If the facts are to be summarized by looking up the hierarchy, another configuration is used. Like the bridged solutions in 9, the use of a hierarchy bridge will involve a many-to-many relationship. If this confuses any of your software products, this relationship can be resolved by employing still more join configurations.

Schema designers often borrow a convention from the entity-relationship modeling world, naming the two key columns in a hierarchy bridge table the way they would appear in an ER model like the one in Figure 10-1: company_key and parent_ company_key In a dimensional design, this convention is inadvisable for two reasons First, note that the bridge table does not cover parent child relationships exclusively For a company at the bottom of the hierarchy, you will find a bridge row relating it to its parent but also to its grandparent, great-grandparent, and so forth Therefore, parent_company_key is a misnomer; a better name might be ancestor_ company_key Second, the ER naming approach implies a focus on a particular company, with the intent to look upward Although it does not have to be used this way, this naming approach makes sense from an ER perspective where the columns are part of an entity.
