Users install tape backup software and then either back up on-demand or schedule the operations to occur at regular intervals. Generally, backups occur relatively quickly since there is no network to pose a bottleneck. Additionally, backup devices can be purchased inexpensively based on the amount of information that must be protected. Performing local backups becomes less efficient when you have to manage several machines. The main problems are with administering the solution. Each backup drive and software program must be configured and managed separately. Also, the costs can get quite high when you must purchase and install multiple tape backup units in your PCs. Still, in a networked environment, you might want to choose a local backup system if you have only a single server or a few servers and cannot afford to invest in larger, centralized storage systems.

This chapter described the transaction mechanism provided by the SQL language: A transaction is a logical unit of work in a SQL-based database. It consists of a sequence of SQL statements that are effectively executed as a single unit by the DBMS. The COMMIT statement signals successful completion of a transaction, making all of its database modifications permanent. The ROLLBACK statement asks the DBMS to abort a transaction, backing out all of its database modifications. Transactions are the key to recovering a database after a system failure; only transactions that were committed at the time of failure remain in the recovered database. Transactions are the key to concurrent access in a multi-user database. A user or program is guaranteed that its transaction will not be interfered with by other concurrent transactions. Occasionally a conflict with another concurrently executing transaction may cause the DBMS to roll back a transaction through no fault of its own. An application program that uses SQL must be prepared to deal with this situation if it occurs.

Each star schema in the preceding chapters features a fact table that measures activities This kind of fact table is known as a transaction fact table As you have seen, it supports a wide variety of analytic possibilities with great efficiency and can be used to capture detailed granular information about a process Some facts, however, cannot be easily studied using this kind of design, and others cannot be accommodated at all This chapter introduces two additional kinds of fact table: the snapshot and the accumulating snapshot It begins with a review of the transaction fact table design, highlighting some key characteristics covered in previous chapters Snapshots and accumulating snapshots are then covered in detail You will learn the kind of analytic challenge each design solves and the unique way each defines grain, and study the characteristics of each design that contrast with the others.

Remote backups are those in which information on one machine is protected by a backup solution on another machine. The other machine might be a dedicated backup server, or it could be a standard file/print server that is also responsible for backup functions (see Figure 2-2). Generally, data is transferred over the network. Based on your requirements, you might choose to back up client workstations or multiple servers over the network.

After reading this chapter, you will understand the purpose and characteristics of the three types of fact table: The transaction fact table tracks the individual activities that define a business process and supports several facts that describe these activities It can provide rich analytic possibilities, and often serves as a granular repository of atomic data The snapshot fact table periodically samples status measurements such as balances or levels These measurements may be equivalent to the cumulative effect of a series of transactions but are not easy to study in that format Some status measurements, such as temperature, cannot be modeled as transactions at all The accumulating snapshot is used to track the progress of an individual item through a series of processing steps It enables the study of elapsed time between major process milestones or events This kind of fact table correlates several different activities in a single row.
